Philadelphia native Alexis Davis Hazell is a Teaching Artist and Dramatic Mezzo-soprano emerging as an active performer in the Southwest, and on the international opera stage. Her interpretations of Madame Flora of Menotti’s The Medium, Madame de Croissy of Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, The Third Lady of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Annina of Verdi’s La Traviata, have earned her accolades in America for the size and quality of her instrument, the lyrical musicality of her technique, and the dramatic intensity she brings to character.
Internationally, Alexis has sung the roles “Maria”, “Lily” and “Strawberry Woman” with European tours of the Gershwins’ masterpiece Porgy and Bess, in Russia, Poland, Greece, Latvia, Estonia, Germany and Switzerland. Her experience with the same opera continued with debuts at San Francisco Opera, Dresden SemperOper, and the Deutsch Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf. In 2014 Dr. Davis Hazell is most recently returning from the San Francisco Opera production of Show Boat, and Porgy & Bess in Mexico City at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Upcoming appearances for Alexis include the upcoming Arizona Opera productions of Rigoletto, Eugene Onegin and Daughter of the Regiment.
Alexis is a magna cum laude graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Temple University, Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance Pedagogy and Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance from Arizona State University. During her graduate work, she made special study of voice disorders and rehabilitation, along with the historical performance practices of the Baroque era. Her doctoral research was geared toward the development of curricula for Russian lyric diction studies tailored to young American singers, based on an innovative application of the principles of clinical phonetics.
In addition to maintaining a busy opera and concert performance schedule with regional organizations including Arizona Opera, Phoenix Opera, and the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, Alexis is also the Creative Director of Jazzoperetry, Inc.: the innovative production company currently featuring the touring concert series Earl & Alexis: AMERICAN SONGS.
Alexis is currently President of the Valley of the Sun Chapter of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) and was recognized by the organization on the national level with a 2014 Emerging Leader Award. As a proud member of the Voice Faculty at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (and recent recipient of the Golden Seat Belt Award, presented to faculty with the highest rates of student retention), Alexis has been instructing voice students in their Performing Arts department, along with introductory music theory, ear training and courses in music humanities, since 2004.
